When Light Leads the Way: The Beautiful Story of Epiphany

I love how some of our richest Christian traditions catch us by surprise. Take Epiphany, for instance. Many of us hear that word and think, "Sure, I've heard of it... but what is it exactly?" Well, let me tell you - it's pretty awesome!

Remember that classic (and honestly, pretty long!) song "The 12 Days of Christmas"? There's actually a beautiful meaning behind those twelve days - they represent the time between Christmas Day and January 6th, when we celebrate Epiphany. It's when those wise men finally made it to see baby Jesus!

But here's what makes Epiphany really special: it's all about revelation. Say it with me - a celebration of revelation! It's the moment when God showed the whole world, not just the Jewish people, that Jesus came for everyone. How beautiful is that?

These wise men from the East spotted something extraordinary - a star unlike any other. And what did they do? They packed their bags and followed it! We're talking about a major road trip here, folks. They weren't just bringing any old gifts either. Gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, and myrrh... well, that one was a bit more somber, pointing to Jesus's future sacrifice.

And then we have King Herod in the story - talk about a party pooper! While these travelers were filled with joy and wonder, Herod was just plain troubled. He was too busy clutching his power and control (sound familiar to anyone?). Isn't it amazing how some things haven't changed? We still struggle with wanting to be in control, to be the leaders of our own lives.

But those wise men - they show us a different way. They came with open hands and open hearts. No holding back, no trying to maintain control. They simply followed the light until they found Jesus, and then they did what any of us would do in the presence of such glory - they fell to their knees in worship.

You know those stars we put on top of our Christmas trees? They're not just pretty decorations. They remind us of that incredible light that led the way to Jesus. And here's the really cool part - we're called to be like that star! To shine and point others toward Jesus.

The story of Epiphany teaches us so much. It shows us what it means to seek Jesus with everything we've got, to worship him fully, and to live our lives as an offering. Just like those wise men who traveled so far with their precious gifts, we're invited to come to Jesus with whatever we have to offer.

And isn't it beautiful that this whole story is about God's love breaking down barriers? It doesn't matter where you're from, what language you speak, or what your background is - just like those wise men from a far-off land, you're invited to come and meet Jesus.

So as we celebrate Epiphany, let's remember - we're all called to be both followers and guides. Sometimes we're following the light, seeking Jesus in our own lives. And sometimes we're the ones shining, helping others find their way to Him. Now that's something worth celebrating!

And let me tell you... that's way better than a commemorative Trump coin at an Epiphany party! (But that's another story entirely...)
