BELIEFS

We Are a Christian People

As members of the Church Universal, we join with all true believers in proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ and in affirming the historic Trinitarian creeds and beliefs of the Christian faith. We value our Wesleyan-Holiness heritage and believe it to be a way of understanding the faith that is true to Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience. more

We Are a Holiness People

God, who is holy, calls us to a life of holiness. We believe that the Holy Spirit seeks to do in us a second work of grace, called by various terms including "entire sanctification" and "baptism with the Holy Spirit"-cleansing us from all sin, renewing us in the image of God, empowering us to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves, and producing in us the character of Christ. Holiness in the life of believers is most clearly understood as Christlikeness. more

We Are a Missional People

We are a sent people, responding to the call of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to go into all the world, witnessing to the Lordship of Christ and participating with God in the building of the Church and the extension of His kingdom (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:1). Our mission (a) begins in worship, (b) ministers to the world in evangelism and compassion, (c) encourages believers toward Christian maturity through discipleship, and (d) prepares women and men for Christian service through Christian higher education. more

PASTORS

We love our Co-Pastors!

Pastors David and Betsy served in France and Croatia as missionaries, church planting pastors, and District Development pastors for 10 years before moving to the States in August 2019. In August of 2019, they began serving on staff as the Next Gen Pastor (Dave) and Young Adult Pastor (Betsy) at a church just outside Philly. They moved to co-pastor Chicago Northside Church of the Nazarene in fall of 2021. David and Betsy are a strong team. They love to partner together and also live into the gifts and passions God has uniquely given them.

Our Partnership

Though we maintain full autonomy, we have entered into a Parent Affiliated Congregation relationship with College Church University Avenue in Bourbonnais  IL.  Together, we will continue to explore ways to effectively serve the people of Chicago.

HISTORY

1924  Chicago Northside was formed with 20 members meeting for the first time September 21, 1924.  The Church was officially organized the following year.

1932 – Rev Albert Schneider arrived and the first year doubled the Sunday school attendance. Although it was the Great Depression our first building was purchased at Greenview and Byron in 1933. After much work it was dedicated in September 1940. The mortgage was paid off and burned in 1943.

From 1937-1947, tent meetings were held from July through Labor day. One year they extended to Christmas.

1971 – We outgrew our building so in November 1971 we purchased our current location and after a year of hard work we moved in.

1974 – Rev Parker and pastor Kim began a Korean church that met at Northside.

1981 – Rev Suleiman Rihani started an Arabic church at Northside. They planted several Arabic churches.

1984 – Chicago First Spanish was formed at Northside with Rev Alfaro. It quickly outgrew our building and in 1992 moved to a building on North Ave. They have planted other churches.

1986 –  The Vietnamese Church,  The Laotian Church and The Filipino Church were sponsored through Chicago Northside Nazarene.

Over the years a number of members of Chicago Northside Church of the Nazarene went into ministry or to the mission field and our outreach has been worldwide.

Through it all, we have remained in the city to meet the needs of many people and cultures. Our prayer is that God guides us in our next steps to continue our service to Ravenswood and the surrounding neighborhoods.  We have a long history and are excited about what and how God is going to write the next years of our history.
